Private ADHD Titration

There is currently a nationwide shortage of medications that treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and an increased demand in the world.

Our service is able to provide private ADHD treatment as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessment fees cover the cost of a single prescription.

Titration

A highly skilled consultant psychiatrist will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your ADHD. This will include medical history and an assessment using the standard adhd medication titration rating scales and questionnaires.

Following your assessment you will be informed that medication may be beneficial in your particular situation. This will take place during your follow-up appointment (which can be done in person by video link, in person or by phone). Your physician will go over the different options for medication available. If you decide to start taking medication, we can help you the opportunity to increase your dosage to optimize the benefits/side-effects balance for you.

This process could take a few weeks and requires gradually altering your child's dosage until the right balance is achieved. It is not unusual to have to titrate three or four medications before finding the best one for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is essential for parents to participate in this titration process, and keep an eye on their child's behavior so that they can let the doctor know if the medicine is helping or causing adverse effects.

If you decide to go back to NHS treatment, you will receive a private prescription for your medication. You will have to pay at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation cost. You must attend six-monthly appointments to monitor your medications. This includes pulse and blood pressure measurements. Annual exams are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the evaluation is completed, you can schedule appointment with the psychiatrist. Typically, the appointment will take place via a zoom video call however in some instances it might be possible to have an audio-only consultation (again at an additional cost).

At this point we will discuss treatment options and agree upon a bespoke individualised ADHD medication titration program. This will include a review of your medication dose and an examination of any negative side effects you may be experiencing. The cost for these titration appointments is PS150 for face to face sessions and PS60 for telephone or online video consultations. The pharmacy will charge you for any charges for medication.

The psychiatrist will also inquire with you about your family history and the impact your ADHD symptoms impact your life, including any issues with your relationships that you may be facing or any other mental health problems that you may be suffering from. ADHD is a genetic condition, so it's important to assess your family history to determine if you are at chance of developing this condition.

During this examination, it is crucial that you are truthful and honest with your doctor, as they will be using the information you provide to determine if you have the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is an important step, as a wrong diagnosis could result in a prescription for medication that is not appropriate.

If you've decided you'd like to be treated for your ADHD, we will then arrange a follow up appointment with one of our psychiatrists that specialize in this field. This can be done in the wake of your diagnosis if are eager to begin treatment right away or within two weeks if prefer to take time to think about the implications of your diagnosis and the alternatives available to you.

We suggest that if you are unsure of your preferences, talk to your GP prior to scheduling your private examination. Certain providers have different guidelines regarding whether they require a GP letter. We also advise that you check whether your GP accepts a "Shared-Care Agreement which means that once discharged from the clinic you will be sent back to them to get the prescription for the medication.

Medication

For many people who want a private diagnosis of ADHD, medication is a key element of their treatment. It isn't always easy to obtain prescriptions from psychiatrists on the NHS. NHS waiting lists can be notoriously long and GPs might be reluctant to refer their patients to specialist services.

One method to avoid this is to request your GP to refer you to Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). This means that you can choose an organization that offers an assessment and titration for adhd service. This can reduce your wait time by a significant amount and is more convenient if you're working and have a busy schedule.

Once you have been identified as a candidate for this treatment, your chosen clinician will examine you and decide whether or not you need to be titrated on medication. You will be asked to fill out forms that vary by provider but the main ones are self-report forms and medical histories from childhood to adulthood. These will help your clinician identify any factors that might indicate that you shouldn't be taking ADHD medication if prescribed.

If you are being titrated the medication will consist of a mixture of stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. These will be thoroughly examined and monitored to determine the best combination for you. The frequency of your follow-up appointments will be contingent on the type and amount of medication you're taking. They could be scheduled monthly or quarterly.
