How to Replace an audi advance key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in the gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good news is that they are very affordable and easy to find, especially when you're looking at the Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor Audi Tt Key Fob could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of your audi key Shell's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a standard part that is found across the key audi 80, 100 200, audi Keyfob UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones could be available in wrecking yards.
