In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or from a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector).
