In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.
Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are quite affordable and readily available particularly if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good choice.

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of your audi lost key's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning.
