It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. When I start the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car key replacement audi is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. They're cheap and easy to find, especially in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous problems in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission of your audi key shell since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12.
