DEFRA stoves installation Exempt Multi Fuel Stoves

There are a wide range of multi-fuel stoves that are exempt from the regulations of defra. Defra approved stoves comply with government regulations and are designed to burn fuel efficiently and emit low emissions.

This is especially important if you live in a smoke control zone. But even if don't have a smoke control area, the Defra stove is better for best DEFRA stoves your chimney and neighbours.

Defra Approved

You may have noticed on our website, several wood burning stoves are described as DEFRA exempted or DEFRA approved. To the average homeowner these terms may seem like jargon they don't need to be aware of but that could not be further from the truth.

Defra approved stoves have been passed rigorous tests to ensure they adhere to the strict regulations of the government regarding emissions of smoke during operation. This is a good thing for those who reside in Smoke Control Area because the law currently prohibits smoke emissions in these areas, unless you use a DEFRA approved multi-fuel stoves-approved stove and an approved fuel. In the past, it was possible to install a non-Defra approved stove in a Smoke Control Area as long as you only used approved fuels such as wood. However, from January 2022 the laws are changing and stoves that aren't approved will not be allowed to be used unless they have been equipped with secondary or best DEFRA Stoves tertiary burning system which can drastically reduce the production of particulate matter NOx, carbon dioxide and organic gaseous compounds.

Our Defra approved ranges are also equipped with a mechanism to prevent you from closing down the top air vent completely. This could result in the fire to smolder and release smoke into your home. Instead, these stoves feature an adjustable air supply that allows you to open the top vent slightly and still maintain an efficient and safe burn.

A Defra-approved stove can also be fitted with a 5-inch chimney liner. This is important as the majority of codes require a chimney to have a minimum 5-inch diameter.

Smoke Control Areas

If you reside in a smoke-control area you'll need a DEFRA-approved stove to burn wood legally within your home. These stoves have been tested by DEFRA to ensure that they meet the strict standards of smoke emissions required in smoke control areas. You can view the list of areas where you will require a Defra approved stove on the Defra website.

Multifuel stoves and stoves exempt from Defra

A Defra approved wood stove, also referred to as a DEFRA Multi Wood Burning Stove or Fuel that has passed a strict test designed by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs. The UK government agency responsible for ensuring the protection of our natural environment, promoting agriculture and food industry and ensuring a flourishing rural economic. The tests Defra approved stoves must pass are designed to ensure that the stove produces minimal amounts of grit and smoke when it is in operation.

Many of the Defra Exempt stoves we stock at Stove Supermarket are multi fuel stoves that allow you to burn authorised smokeless fuels and seasoned wood. These stoves are also known as Defra stoves, Defra approved wooden burners and are abbreviated SE.

Contrary to older stoves, which are generally not suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas, the latest Defra multi-fuel and woodburning stoves have secondary and tertiary air systems that ensure that the wood is fully burned before it exits the chimney. This is a cleaner process than leaving a log on the fire for long periods of time. It also reduces the amount of nuisance smoke that could be produced.

If you live in a Smoke Control Area, or if you are thinking of moving into one, then a Defra exempt stove is a great option for your home. Not only is it more sustainable, but it can also help minimise the nuisance smoke that could upset your neighbours.

You can still use an open fire, barbecues or pizza ovens in your garden. However excessive or toxic smoke may be considered a nuisance, and you could be fined. In an area designated as a Smoke Control Area, you are not allowed to use open flames or stoves that burn damp, rotten, or wet wood or any other fuels.

Burning Other Fuels Other Than Petroleum

Defra Approved Stoves are designed to burn different types of fuels including wood. They burn wood so cleanly that they are in compliance with the government's strict regulations for emissions during operation in smoke control areas. They can be used in any smoke-control zone, provided they are burning approved fuels such as pellets, briquettes, and logs. Stoves that have been certified by Defra will be marked with a SE' symbol which means Smoke Exempt.

What makes the Defra approved stove different from conventional multifuel stoves is the fact that they have air vents that pre-heat the air prior to entering the firebox. This pre-heated air helps to ensure that all the fuel is ignited and burned, leading to more efficient combustion.
